So as you know, we’ve been watching and analysing Misfits, series 1.
We’ve had to find the different camera shots, angles, edits, sounds, mise-en-scene etc used within different scenes.

Here, we have an extreme close up  of the lip gloss. This portrays sexuality and shows that’s it’s a female. While this is happening, there are voices in the background that are extremely muffled which could give the impression of character being very self-absorbed.

The image of the lip gloss then cuts to another extreme close up but this time, it’s of the character applying the lip gloss. The movement at this point appears to be slightly slowed down, this could be to add emphasis on movement to portray more of a sexual approach to the situation.

This is the use of yet another extreme close up. It is of the blusher which again could add sexuality to the scene. This shot then cuts to the character applying it to her cheek. –

As this character approaches the end to putting her make up on, the muffled voices in the background become more and more noticeable and easier to understand. Showing that even though she is very self-absorbed, the realization of the surrounding characters comes to the surface.

This shot, like all the others add sexuality. The slightly slowed down motion adds emphasis on movement. It shows that the character is very precise when applying her make up, being careful. These movements may make the audience expect someone beautiful etc as the shots use help to emphasis sexual characteristics: eyes, cheeks and lips, emphasis beauty.

We then get a shot that reveals the ‘finishing product’. We see that it isn’t how it first appears to be… instead of seeing someone beautiful, elegant etc, we see her chewing gum, wearing big hoop earrings, she appears to look what people would stereotypically class as common?

At this point, the camera pans from side to side. The focus shifts from Alisha to Curtis, however keeping Alisha in the shot, the voices in the background are now very clear.  This shot creates some sort of framing, possibly suggesting some kind of relationship between the pair. He’s looking at her, she isn’t looking at him, showing that Curtis is more keen as even when he starts speaking to Simon, his attention is still focused on Alisha, Simon isn’t as important.

This is a master shot, it is a shot that helps to answer questions: who, what, where, when and possibly even why? We can see all the main characters, we can see that they are all in some sort of changing room, we can see that it is day time through the window at the top. The contrast in colours make the characters stand out more as they are in bright orange uniforms, stood against a very bland, grey background. It shows Simon stood in the middle of the frame, he is the center of attention. You can see that the other characters don’t appear to have much respect for him, he looks scared, uncomfortable, like he doesn’t like the attention on him.

Here, we have a close up of Simons face, you can tell by his expression that he doesn’t feel very comfortable or confident. This leads on to a series of action shots of the other characters as Simon couldn’t do as he was asked…

 

Once all these shots have been shown, the other characters leave the room and non-diegetic music starts playing, to add anticipation?

We’re then left with a medium shot of Simon showing that he is now alone, maybe feeling embarrassed?

Once the medium shot has been shown, we move on to this shot of Simon turning invisible. The camera at first is looking up towards Simon but changes to this, where it is looking down on him from above maybe to signify that something strange is going to happen, we are given a few unusual shots. While this is happening, there is non-diegetic sounds used again, it helps to show the discomfort that Simon is going through.

This medium shot shows everyone leaving through the door. The door then shuts signifying that Simon in now completely alone?

We return to a shot of Simon and the camera moves away from him showing again, that he is alone, in a cold, depressing room.

This master shot shows the other characters, plus a new one, are all in a different room. It shows that the new character isn’t in a uniform, is he more superior? It is a tracking shot making the scene appear more realistic.

We cut to a point of view shot of a mound of clothing on the floor, showing what you would see as if you were in the scene with them.

Shaun vs Nathan

Any comparison?

• They both appear to really dislike their father figures but for no apparent, clear-cut reason. They both appear to rebel against their mothers partners.

• Both characters are noticeably different to all the others in the group, Shaun is noticeably younger than all the others, Nathan is the one that comes out with ridiculous, childish comments, not matter what the situation is.
• They both seem to ‘act up’ to their friends at one point or another, as if to show off and make the others in the group like them more that what they already do. 

Misfits!

In another lesson, we are now looking at the series of Misfits, yaaay! I’ve never really seen it before even though i’ve wanted to… i’m not one for remembering times of programmes or what channel they are on

From what we’ve seen already, i’m quite enjoying it and i’m enjoying seeing the rest! I think the character that everyone loves at the moment, is Nathan. He is actually hilarious! He comes out with such rubbish and his little inputs here and there are great. Simon is the character that comes across quite weird. He’s so quiet and Nathan seems to quite enjoy taking the mick out of him. Alisha is the gobby, spoilt character. She seems to think of her self as ‘queen bee’. She knows she’s attractive and uses it to her advantage, especailly when it comes to lads. Kelly is the girl that comes across quite slutty. However, it is just an act, like a suit of armor. She is so defensive about her self and hates it when people accuse her of being a ‘slag’. And then there’s Curtis. He was a sports start but got caught in acts involving drugs. He seems quite flirty, especially towards Alisha and also seems to be a tiny bit influenced by Nathans random inputs…
