Gender representation in the Daily Mail…

Basically, from every day life, more times than none, when someone mentions the word celebrity, there are many things that come to mind, especially women: Fashion, Weight Loss, Best bikini bod’, New hair styles and so on.  It didn’t come as quite a surprise with the things that the site had to say about celebrities. Society nowadays is all for appearance, celebrity fall outs and anything that they can pick up on and slate the celebrity. This sort of attitude that is everywhere we go, has lead many people to follow the examples of the media. It comes to the point where no celebrity can get it right…

On the showbiz section on the Daily Mail, there was a story named ‘Lindsay Lohan hangs out again hand-in-hand with designer Phillip Plein… so when will he do something about her clothes?’. Straight away it attacks Lindsay’s clothing. Going on to read the article, the first things mentioned are to do with Lindsay’s fashion.

‘He’ll have closets spilling with his creations, so perhaps Philip Plein can loan one or two to Lindsay Lohan’, ‘LiLo failed miserably in the fashion stakes and hasn’t taken full advantage of her designer friend.’ are both quotes from the article. The examples that the media have shared with the public are obviously taking effect. This is clearly shown in the comments made further down… one comment read ‘Ermm….. I finally went to have a look at “Philipp Plein” website and collections. Gosh, no wonder he chose Lohan: vulgarity at its best.’

This message is put across many celebrities. Another celebrity that has to face the Medias accusations and standards is Demi Moore. It goes on to say about how the star is ‘disappearing‘. Pressures from the Media could very much so be blamed for this. Always going on about celebrities weight (seeing sizes like size 10 and 12) as big. The article talks about how her dress ‘hung off of her’ at the Five Premier, which undoubtedly will add even more pressure on the star as she is not being seen as too skinny. I personally find her body in this picture to be disturbingly small and frail but the Media should pay more attention to the effects its articles have on people and how they are possible to react.

Public comments like ‘Being so thin makes her head look HUGE’, ‘Her face is very sunken in’ and ‘Trying to imitate youth by getting thinner and thinner won’t help you keep your toyboy Demi’ are all criticisms that give a helping hand to the drastic measures taken by celebrities which therefore, result in problems such as the one that Demi is now experiencing.

The impacts that the Media has on the public are outrageous. There comes a point where Media organisations should stop and take a look at the effects they’re having on society. When you hear of school children being bullied because they’re ‘fat‘ or ‘ugly‘ Media organisations and standards have a huge part blame to be placed upon them. It shows the moral ignorance of many people nowadays, no one is perfect, no one is up to standards with everything, but that’s how life is. Unfortunately, many of us find these imperfections a reason to insult one another.

3 media terms and their definitions

Match on action – this is when you cut a shot during the action to another camera. The other camera is on a different angle but is still showing the same shot of action from the shot before.

Shot reverse shot – this is where during a conversation between two and the camera shows one person looking at the other but will then swap to show you the other person looking back.

Finally, 180 degree rule – this is when in a shot, two characters in the same scene should both have the same left/right relationship to one another.

movies, movies, moooovies

Okay, so there’s loads of films that i’m into and of a mixed genre too…

The most reason film I’ve been to see was the inbetweeners and I must say, I thought it was brilliant and i found it even more amusing when i saw a much older generation walk into the cinema to watch it, its shows that it doesnt just appeal to my age range. When the series was on TV I made sure I watched them all and when I heard the film was coming out I was like :O ooooo, must see! So I did, twice (bit sad to admit but hey ho). The reason as to why I seem to like it so much is I just find it hilarious, the characters, the quotes, the brilliant dance they do…

For me, comedy films are a must! Love a good giggle! Annnnnnnd, this film is something a lot of people my age as well as others can relate to… We all know what it is, what its about, the sort of stuff that is included in it.

i will add more to this some other time as at the moment, my internet seems to think this is an appropriate time to not work -.-

This is England…

Okay, so in one part of our media we’ve been focusing on This is England and the attitudes based within the film and also how the director/s have managed to put across certain feelings etc.

At the moment, we are analysing Combo’s introductory scene. While this scene is playing, you are flipped between it and the scene of Smell and Shaun outside…

The scene begins with a party, it includes close ups which allow you to see facial expressions and that everyone’s enjoying themselves, it puts across a happy

atmosphere which allows the viewer to accept that they all feel comfortable around one another and in that type of environment. It shows that even though Milky is a different race to all the others, he is excepted as one of their own, not discriminated against for having a different ethnicity as all the other group members. As this is happening, the scene flicks between the one of Smell and Shaun out in the garden together. This also adds a happy atmosphere as its
It then flicks back to the party inside where all of a sudden, it is interrupted by a forceful knock on the door which adds tension. Everyone inside thinks it is the police and so they do not appear to be very worried. This tension is very soon turned into shock and worry as Banjo bursts through the door putting across avery threatening sense to not only the characters, but also the audience. This feeling then worsens as Banjo begins to swing a very large knife around. At this point, everyone is silent. shows that they are both comfortable with one another. However, this scene very soon becomes negative towards the audience as the kiss between the two of them can be seen as very uncomfortable as there is a

clear viable age gap between them.

Then it shows Combo running into the house, making the audience think that he has come to help the group who are sat in shock while Banjo swings his knife around. This is then changed as he runs into the room screaming and picking Woody up… The tension then created is soon released as the group members soon realise that they know Combo. This then allows the audience to relax.

After this, Combo begins to tell a story… Even though Milky is in the room, and Combo clearly knows he is, it doesn’t stop him from using abusive and threatening language and even though he apologizes to Milky, it doesn’t stop him from using it. The camera then shows the characters facial expressions and body language to show that they are scared and not at all impressed with Combo’s attitude and approach to his story. It also shows Milky’s reaction which show that he, as well is not impressed. However, two of the group members appear to be completely oblivious to the tension created by Combos story and the change in atmosphere.  His story, in a way explains Combo without him probably realising, as being a bully.

At this moment, Shaun and Smell enter the room to find the two new additions (Combo and Banjo). At first, tension rises as Combo’s reaction appears to be reluctant towards Shaun at first, as if to show that Combo does not appreciate Shaun and Smell taking the attention off of him as after all, he’s the boss..?  Combo comes across as being patronisiong, Shaun maybe reminding Combo of himself when he was younger. Combos reactions show that he could quite possibly find Shaun to be a threat, even though he isn’t.

about me

Hiya guys! I’m Kelli and well, do you really want to know about me? 😉

Basically, I’m one of these people where media plays quite a big part in their life.. I absolutely love! music and not just one genre of it either.. If i like whats playing then I’m more than happy. The most common type of music that i listen to though is R&B with the odd bit of rock and dance popped in.  I’m also a pretty big fan of comedy films such as Step Brothers, The Inbetweeners, Mean Girls and so on but, because i have a car mad brother, i’m quite into Fast and Furious. I am also a mahooooosive fan of films like Step Up, probably a trait that i picked up from my brother.. I would love to be able to dance like them but to be honest? I am far to lazy and unfit to even attempt such a thing.

The most recent film that i’ve watched was the Inbetweeners movie and well… i loved it! I really enjoyed the series of it on TV and so when i heard that the film was coming out, believe it or not, i was pretty excited. I just find it hilarious.

I’m a user of sites such as facebook and skype where i keep in touch with friends and even family. I listen to music on channels like viva and mtv and then I’m in to programs like Eastenders, Scrubs, Skins, The Inbetweeners and even the odd bit of the Jeremy Kyle Show, i don’t know why (it’s good entertainment when you’re off school ill) :P… I read all sorts of magazines, if i see something that gets my interest then I’m more than happy to spend my time reading it no matter what magazine it’s in, but as i don’t regularly use the internet via laptop/computer or watch TV, my mobile phone is also a big part of my life, i don’t just use it to text and ring people but i also use it for majority of my music, photos and the odd video. One magazine i read quite often in Pick me Up, mainly for the fact that the mother enjoys reading it so i sneaky steal it for how ever long and return it to her once i’ve read it. 🙂

wow, sorry about the paragraphs..

Well, i think that’s about it for now, it’s all i can think of for the time being…
