Full pitch for ‘Breaking Reality’

Breaking Reality, what is Breaking Reality? It’s about a typical 16 year old lad, Dan Hilton who is in lower sixth. He’s into all the typical ‘ladish’ things, the only difference? He is extremely creative, full of ideas but was forced into more academic subjects and hates them with a passion!
He has these daydreams where everything is exaggerated, including his feelings for his highschool sweetheart, Lucy. In one of his majorly exaggerated daydreams, he finds himself face to face with his opposition, Captain Kev, the captain of the football team. This ends up putting Dan in such an embarrassing position.
After everything, Dan never ends up getting his highschool sweetheart but still manages to change his subjects and goes on to get exceedingly good grades and goes on to the University of Art, London. He then realises he can get all the girls he ever wanted! Unfortunately, we haven’t yet managed to think of any actors/actresses for this. However, we thought about having it directed by Edgar Wright who has also directed films such as Hot Fuzz. The action and imagination was inspired by Sucker Punch and we were thinking for it to be in association with BBC films using Universal Productions.

Full treatment of “Breaking Reality”

Breaking Reality

Breaking Reality… Dan Hilton is a normal, British 16 year old who is studying his AS levels at a normal British school. After getting outstanding GCSE results, his parents force him into studying maths, further maths and physics. However, being the really creative person he is, he was allowed to take art. It’s the only lesson where he can express his feelings and be himself, unlike his other more acedemic subjects which he hates with a passion! His over creative mind is forever working not just with the practical stuff in art, but also in his other lessons in a sub-conscience state of uncontrollable daydreams. In these daydreams he exaggerates reality by creating little dream worlds using parts of reality (people, technology, objects, etc). However, it isn’t only in his ‘boring’ lessons that he daydreams… When performing normal day-to-day activities appear to be like a blank canvas for Dans mind as he preserves normal situations which are then converted into over the top situations in his daydreams in an adrenaline-fulled way.
A few days into the school year, Dan bumps into this absolutely stunning girl named Lucy who he instantly falls in love with. He tries to talk to Lucy with every chance he gets but finds his opposition, captain Kev, the captain of the lower sixth football team standing in his way.
With Dans constant situation with talking to Lucy, his mind ends up kicking in thinking of little schemes to actually be able to socialise with Lucy without Kev knowing. In a particular physics lesson Dan comes up with what he thinks is a foolproof plan. This plan is to get Lucys number by taking her mobile from out of her handbag and texting himself and then return the phone without anyone knowing. Yet again, his imagination takes hold during his attempt of doing his plan. As a result of this Dan turns ‘ninja mode’ on and finds himself attempting to break into a high security, heavily guarded facility. He had to make his way to the central computer and send top-secret information back to his own computer and manage to escape without setting off any alarms. However, in reality? He’s just texting himself a simple (!). He succeeds and all of a sudden, he’s back to reality. He rushes to check his phone and there it is, a message from a number he didn’t recognise.
As well as this challenge, he has also been trying to have his subjects changed. He checks the time and a surge of panic goes through Dans mind, he’s late for his meeting to discuss his subjects. In turn, he begins to run towards the common room in search of the head of sixth form, and yet again, his imagination kicks in. This time, as he’s running towards the common room, it turns into a war scene. He can hear a bomb ticking and he realises hes the one to turn it off, but is quickly running out of time. He eventually finds the bomb and defuses it.

Later on that week, Dan’s sat with his friends on the field, its lunch time. He’s sat watching some other students play football while others sit doing work and chatting. One of his friends decides to grab his bag and run off with it. He shoots up and runs after his friend, like any other teenager would do. Running along the field, Dan suddenly finds himself in a plane, flying over London chasing a German helicopter. Zooming between the buildings he eventually manages to catch up. Then, all the other students see a strange child tearing round a field with his arms open wide and making aeroplane noises. All of a sudden, things come to a halt, Dan’s crashed into a barrage balloon, or should i say, Captain Kev.

This quickly brings Dan back down to reality to find Captain Kev towering over him. Then Lucy pokes her head round Kev and gives Dan a little sympathetic wave to say goodbye. Dan picks himself up off of the floor and takes a step back. He raises to full height keeping his eyes fixated on Kev. Yet again, reality appears to make a rush for the exit… the surrounding grass turns brown and seems to disappear beneath Dan’s feet. The only things left? Dan and Kev, stood face to face, in a derelict, western town atmosphere. Kev throws a punch but Dan sees him drawing and evades his attack in a matrix style, he quickly draws and shoots Kev. The single bullet flies towards Kev and hits him between the eyes. As Kev slowly falls and hits the floor, reality zooms back. The grass turns green, the surrounding buildings re-appear and a crowed of students blurred back into view. Dan looks down to find Kev laying unconscious with a broken nose, Lucy by his side. Mesmerised with the crowds reaction on cheering and clapping, Dan’s unable to hear the insults Lucy was shouting at him.

From that moment on, Lucy ignored Dan but surprisingly, he wasn’t bothered. At the end of that lunch he got rewarded with a new timetable featuring art, music, media and theatre.

After exceeding the national average for both AS and A2, Dan got into the University of Art, London. He went on to get a degree and became a world famous, extremely wealthy, film making ladies man.

Moral of the story? Do what you want, do whats best for you. Make your own decisions. No matter what, don’t let anyone else’s opinion change yours. Because of the hybrid genre of this film, action/comedy, the film inspiring the action side of things and oart of the storyline is Sucker Punch and the film inspiring the childish humor and the entire genre idea is Hot Fuzz.

Misfits vs This is England ’86

Shaun vs Nathan

Any comparison?

  • They both appear to really dislike their father figures but for no apparent, clear-cut reason. They both appear to rebel against their mothers partners.
  • Both characters are noticeably different to all the others in the group, Shaun is noticeably younger than all the others, Nathan is the one that comes out with ridiculous, childish comments, not matter what the situation is.
  • They both seem to ‘act up’ to their friends at one point or another, as if to show off and make the others in the group like them more that what they already do.

Misfits!

In another lesson, we are now looking at the series of Misfits, yaaay! I’ve never really seen it before even though i’ve wanted to… i’m not one for remembering times of programmes or what channel they are on :/

From what we’ve seen already, i’m quite enjoying it and i’m enjoying seeing the rest! I think the character that everyone loves at the moment, is Nathan. He is actually hilarious! He comes out with such rubbish and his little inputs here and there are great. Simon is the character that comes across quite weird. He’s so quiet and Nathan seems to quite enjoy taking the mick out of him. Alisha is the gobby, spoilt character. She seems to think of her self as ‘queen bee’. She knows she’s attractive and uses it to her advantage, especailly when it comes to lads. Kelly is the girl that comes across quite slutty. However, it is just an act, like a suit of armor. She is so defensive about her self and hates it when people accuse her of being a ‘slag’. And then there’s Curtis. He was a sports start but got caught in acts involving drugs. He seems quite flirty, especially towards Alisha and also seems to be a tiny bit influenced by Nathans random inputs…

Here’s a trailer for the first series:

60 second pitch

So for our film “Breaking Reality” we have been asked to do a 60 second pitch.

Things to mention in our 60 second pitch:

  • The title – Breaking reality
  • Who it’s about – 16 year old at sixth form
  • Personality? He’s really creative – loves art
  • Forced into more academic subjects
  • His only escape – Art is the only way he can truly express himself
  • The exaggeration of his daydreams.

Short insite into “Breaking Reality”

So in media we’ve been asked to get into groups and come up with ideas for an opening sequence of a film that we make and then film the first two opening minuter of it. My group is Grace, Richard and Beckey. So here is a shortened down treatment for our film.

Our film is called “Breaking Reality

We have decided to make an action/comedy (hybrid).

It will be located in a present day English school

It’s certification will be a 12

The main character is a young boy who is in sixth form. He is very arty and creative and doesn’t really enjoy more acedemic subjects. He easily gets bored and is constantly daydreaming.

So here is a little insite as to what our film is about…

Our main character, Dan Hilton is in lower sixth. He has been forced, by his parents to take part in more acedemic subjects such as maths, further maths and physics which, as he is more of an arty personality, he hates it.

As a forth subject, his parents allow him to do art which he loves. He finds art to be his only way to escape and express himself. However, when he is in his less preferred lessons, he daydreams which ends up with him ending up in awkward, exciting and yet hilariously embarrassing situations.

Behind his parents back he tries to get his options changed to his more preferred arty subjects. Being in sixth form, he meets the girl of his dreams but finds that the captain of the football team is his ‘opposition’ to get her.

In the end, he manages to get his options changed and goes on to getting really good results at school. He continues on to university and again, does really well. He ends up becoming rich and famous and even though he doesn’t get the high school sweetheart of his dreams, he ends up getting all the girls he could possibly want.

Camera work in the ‘Jurassic Park’ clip

When looking at the camera work in the Jurassic Park clip we had to look at
positioning
angle
movement

A lot of the time, there were close ups used. These are used so that you can see things that the director wants to point out e.g. There was a close up of the cup of water. You could see the ripples in the water during the loud bangs (the dinosaur getting closer). It shows you that something is happening despite you not being able to see it. It adds tension as you don’t know what’s going to happen.
Another shot that was used was a close up of a reaction shot. This is so that you can see the reation on the characters face… The close up of this reaction shows the audience a sense of feeling.
Once the characters become awear of the dinosaur, long shots are used so that the audience can see the background as well as whats going in e.g. When the man runs out of the car to the toilet. You can see the dinosaur in the background.
Mid shots are also used and when they are, you can see characters reactions.
A lot of the shots were taken from a low angle making the audience look up at the dinosaur making the dinosaur the dominant figure. E.g. When the walls around the toilet collapse, it shows the man sat on the toilet looking up at the dinosaur.
Tracking shots were used so that you could follow the character as though you were going along with them. It could be used to make the audience feel more of a part of the film rather then just sitting and watching it.
Another shot that was used quite a bit was a birds eye view shot… looking down on whats below, lets you see a bigger surface, this lets you see whats going on and the surroundings.
